The protest song of the workers' movement sounds when you turn the crank of the music box. "The International" with the well-known words: "Debout, les damnés de la terre" ("Arise, wretched of the earth" or "Stand up, all victims of oppression") was written as a poem by Eugène Pottier in 1871 and set to music a short time later by the socialist songwriter Pierre De Geyter.
Around 1900, the International gained importance in Europe and called for unity as well as social upheaval. It quickly became the anthem of the working people and is probably the most sung political song. Translated into many languages, it can be heard and sung at demonstrations, rallies and protests around the world.
If you place the small music box – with or without its decorative cardboard box – on a larger object that serves as a resonating chamber, you can amplify the melody. For example, a chair, a table, a wooden box or a shelf is suitable.
